I look forward to seeing what they add to this game going forward, and where Xehanort’s story leads him…besides the obvious, of course.

Ultimately, I found Dark Road to be fun and full of potential, but there’s much to be done in terms of story and gameplay depth. The lack of a stamina system is also a major plus, meaning the only incentive to spend money is getting better cards. I will give props to the auto-battle however the AI of the game will often make the most rational decision, meaning that when grinding is necessary, you can rest assured that your player can take care of themselves, providing the enemy level isn’t too high. There is not much variety in the quests, and much of the story missions are so “grindy” that most players will complete them by just by setting the battles to auto, and setting their phones down while doing something else. And unless you are willing to spend money, or have some jewels remaining from playing Union Cross, there’s not many options to gather a lot of cards, unless you’re willing to do some HEAVY grinding, which is not worth it at this present time.Īt the moment, it still feels like Union Cross is the primary focus for Square Enix, and even though Dark Road is out now, it feels almost early access. Unlike Union Cross, the gameplay feels fun and engaging, but the possibilities really only open up after the player has acquired a good amount of cards at their disposal. In my opinion after playing the game a week, it might be a bit too soon for anyone besides hardcore Kingdom Hearts fans. But the most important question: Is this game fun? Should you play it?

So, we’ve gone over the story and gameplay of said game. This search prompts them to explore the only two available Disney worlds in the game (currently), Agrabah from Aladdin, and Wonderland from Alice in Wonderland…though I suppose neither of these two Disney worlds need much introduction to Kingdom Hearts veterans, huh? While the ongoing story of episode one wasn’t all that interesting, the ending made me incredibly curious to know what happens next. The six Keyblade wielders are given an assignment by their teacher, Master Odin, to find their seven missing upperclassmen.

Only the first episode is available at the time of this writing, and it focuses on not only Xehanort and Eraqus, but their fellow classmates also training in the ways of the Keyblade. Taking place roughly 70 years before the first Kingdom Hearts game, the story seeks to answer the question: “Why did he become the Seeker of Darkness?” The “he” is of course referring to Xehanort, who serves as one of the two protagonists of the game along with his best friend, Eraqus.

Well, the first part of that story is out now, as Dark Road is the newest episodic mobile game released for the series, treated as somewhat of an expansion to Kingdom Hearts Union Cross, as players who already downloaded Union Cross do not need to download another app.īut while the game itself is an expansion with the same art style for the worlds and characters, the story is completely different from Union Cross.

Hardcore fans of the series have likely been curious about the past of Master Xehanort, the main antagonist of the previous KH saga, which ended with Kingdom Hearts 3, and this desire was tempered even higher upon Tetsuya Nomura’s statements that he wanted to do an origin story about Xehanort.
